Toronto native Alex Goodman is following in the well-trod footsteps of Canadian artists who make a bigger name for themselves outside their own country than they do at home. In 2014, Goodman became the first Canadian to win both first place and the people’s choice category in the Montreux Jazz Festival’s International Guitar Competition. Guitar International has called him “a definitive musical voice.” Goodman moved to New York City in 2012 to pursue a graduate degree at the Manhattan School of Music, and has remained in the city to work with artists that include Dick Oatts, Kevin Hays and Rich Perry. Here at home, his 2013 album, Bridges, was nominated for a JUNO Award in the contemporary jazz category. Goodman won a 2013 ASCAP Herb Alpert Jazz Composer Award, and has written extensively for solo guitar, chamber groups, string quartets and big bands.
