This new collective quartet puts a unique spin on the “two-horn” sound. Performing originals from each of the band members as well as the jazz standard repertoire, the group recently toured Canada and recorded their first CD in July 2016, slated for a fall release.
With an established reputation as one of Canada’s leading saxophonists, Kirk MacDonald has released thirteen recordings as a leader, earning two Juno Awards, six Juno nominations, an East Coast Music Award, The Toronto Musicians Association Lifetime Achievement Award and Socan’s Hagood Hardy Award for outstanding achievement in composition. Kirk’s recordings have featured many leading US and international musicians including Harold Mabern, Tom Harrell, John Taylor, Dennis Mackrel, Ron McClure, Pat LaBarbera and David Virelles alongside many outstanding Canadian musicians such as Neil Swainson, Lorne Lofsky, Brian Dickinson, Terry Clarke and many others.
Juno Award winner and Canadian jazz icon Pat LaBarbera spent many years in the bands of the legendary Elvin Jones and Buddy Rich from the early seventies through to the early 2000s. Pat has also shared the stage with many other luminaries including McCoy Tyner, Chet Baker and Freddie Hubbard, as well as jazz stars like Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis and Frank Foster. Pat’s time in Canada has seen him perform with a who’s who of the international and Canadian jazz scene; he remains one of the country’s national treasures as a leading figure in both performance and education.
Adam Nussbaum continues to be one of the most highly sought-after drummers of his generation, fuelling the bands of many jazz greats since the mid-seventies. Adam has worked in the bands of his peers John Scofield, Dave Liebman and Michael Brecker. He has also held long musical relationships with established stars—working in the bands of Stan Getz, James Moody, Toots Thielemans and Joe Henderson—and has done considerable freelance work and recorded with numerous other leading musicians.
Kieran Overs has been active on the Canadian scene since 1970. He has toured internationally with Moe Koffman/Dizzy Gillespie, Jane Bunnett, Sophie Milman, Carol Welsman and Emilie-Claire Barlow, among others. Having worked in Toronto as a sideman with such artists as Zoot Sims, Chet Baker, Bill Charlap, Harold Mabern, Jr., Carol Sloane/Bill Mays, Brian Dickinson, Pat LaBarbera, Alex Dean and Kirk MacDonald, Overs has established a solid reputation in Canadian jazz. He has released 4 CDs as leader/producer and more than 80 as a sideman.
