Pianist Robert Glasper is in the forefront of mixing jazz, hip-hop and the rest of today’s popular idiomatic sounds. Winner of the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album with Black Radio (2012), Glasper decided when he was a child performing in churches of his native Houston, Texas that his mission was to wed jazz harmonies to the gospel sound. His recordings from the mid 2000s were straightahead until he caught the neo-soul wave, collaborating with singers and rappers such as Bilal, Mos Def, Kanye West, Jay-Z and Erykah Badu. He’s come to balance his own pieces with covers of established jazz compositions and instrumentals of rock themes by Nirvana, Radiohead and Soundgarden. Today he runs a conventional piano trio and an electronically bristling Robert Glasper Experiment featuring saxophonist and vocodorist Casey Benjamin. In 2015 Glasper was music director of the bio-pic Miles Ahead about another defier of genres: Miles Davis.
