If anyone ever seemed destined for a successful career in music, it’s trombonist Ryan Keberle. Born in Spokane, Washington, to a pair of music educators, Keberle studied classical violin and piano before switching to trombone. After crossing the country to attend the Manhattan School of Music he studied with master trombonist Steve Turre, and he concluded his formal music education as a member of Jazz at Juilliard’s first graduating class in 2003. Over the next decade, he lent his instrumental voice to artists as varied as Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and Wynton Marsalis, and became a regular member of Maria Schneider’s Jazz Orchestra. All of this work led the New York Times to call him “a young trombonist of vision and composure.” Keberle formed Catharsis, a piano-less quartet, in 2012, applying three of New York’s most compelling young voices—trumpeter Mike Rodriguez, bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Eric Doob—to original compositions that reflect influences that include Duke Ellington, The Beatles and Ravel.
