Jazz at Noon

10 AM - Longfields Grade 8 Jazz Band

The Longfields Grade 8 Jazz Band is made up of 30 dedicated students who are in their second year of instrumental music.  This year’s group has performed many concerts and competed recently at the Capital Region Music Festival (www.crmf.on.ca).  They won for the 8th consecutive years a GOLD award and were also awarded for the 2nd time the prestigious honour of the overall “Most Outstanding Jazz Band at the festival.  Their performance at this year’s Ottawa Jazz Festival will be their last performance of the school year!

11 AM - Lisgar Collegiate Institute Senior Jazz Ensemble

The Lisgar Collegiate Institute Senior Jazz Ensemble conducted by Richard Arrigo is a group of Grade 10-12 students that meet every Tuesday evening.  This group has performed in local, provincial and national festivals, and performs concerts in the community for conferences. It has been performing in the youth series as part of the Ottawa International Jazz Festival for over 15 years.  Students in this group are also members of our Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds and our Intermediate and Symphony Orchestras.

Noon - Hillcrest Jazz Band

The Hillcrest Jazz Band is an integral part of their school and community.  They play at every school function and are in demand at community events.  The group is made up of enthusiastic music students in Grades 9-12, many of whom are multi-instrumentalists.  They work with the Carleton University JazzWorks team every year, and this year were pleased to host the University of Toronto Jazz band as well. 

1 PM - OCDSB Secondary All-Star Jazz Band

In its seventh year, the OCDSB Secondary All-Star Jazz Band was originally created to provide an opportunity for enhancing our high school musician’s Big Band experience. Auditions for the band occur in October of each year and rehearsals start in November. The opportunity is available to all secondary students in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. Past performances include: Ottawa International Jazz Festival Youth Series 2016 as well as, a variety of community events such as Westboro FUSE and WestFest. The band performed at MusicFest Canada National Competition earlier this year and, was awarded with a Gold standard for the second year in a row.

2 PM - JazzEd Youth Jazz Band 2017

JazzEd is a program the Ottawa Jazz Festival organizes as an opportunity for some of the city’s most talented young musicians to get involved in a 10-week jazz performance program. The students will have the opportunity to study with some of the best professional musicians from Ottawa and beyond as well as a chance to perform with talented peers from across the city. The program is run by renowned guitarist/ composer Roddy Ellias and JUNO Nominated saxophonist Petr Cancura. Past guest lecturers have included Jesse Stewart, Rob Frayne, Mike Tremblay and John Geggie. The group explores composition, improvisation and arranging through a wide range of musical repertoire.

2 PM - Capital Youth Jazz Orchestra

JazzEd is a program the Ottawa Jazz Festival organizes as an opportunity for some of the city’s most talented young musicians to get involved in a 10-week jazz performance program. The students will have the opportunity to study with some of the best professional musicians from Ottawa and beyond as well as a chance to perform with talented peers from across the city.
