BIOGRAPHY
Rake-star assembled in 2000 to play from the Sun Ra songbook and has since expanded in size and intent. The band takes its cues (and its name) from Sun Ra and his Arkestra and includes some of Ottawa's best and most adventurous free jazz musicians. In 2003, Rake-star released their debut album Some Ra, which effortlessly combined the group’s versions of Sun Ra compositions – infused with their own artistic insight – and original pieces, focused on the interplay of soloist and ensemble.
Gamelan Semara Winangun (Flowering Of Love Orchestra) presents Legong musical traditions of Bali on bronze percussion and drum. The instruments are tuned to a five-note scale and are played in pairs, one tuned slightly higher, giving the music a shimmering sound. Semara Winangun turns bronze to gold.
Though Jazz archestra and Balinese percussion orchestra are rooted in two different worlds and present music from two very different traditions, they meet in the middle, combine their talents and, together, push the music to the edge.
