Mark Helias - bass
Gerry Hemingway - drums
Ray Anderson - trombone

Friends as well as musical associates who've been playing together since 1977, bassist Mark Helias, drummer Gerry Hemingway and trombonist Ray Anderson are acclaimed leaders of their own diverse projects. As BassDrumBone they celebrate 40 years of development of a distinctive approach to the challenging no-chordal-instrument trio format. All three are composer-improvisers, and in both modes they imbue original melodies with rousing energy, earthy humour, virtuosic surprises, the willingness and ability to explore airy abstractions, swing hard or concoct ways of playing in-between those poles. Their 2016 two-CD album The Long Road, awarded four stars in DownBeat, showcases a wealth of ideas, bluesiness, grit and high spirits, sometimes grounded in irony or darkness. Helias, whose tone is big and strong, has achieved with emphatic and unpredictable Hemingway and the ever-expressive Anderson a unique balance: the three allow each other enormous personal freedoms while exemplifying perfect yet never static unity in their collaborations.
