Free Improvisation experiment with Kris Davis, Lina Allemano, and Anna Webber

Friday June 19 @ 7:00pm

Performers

Kris Davis - prepared piano

Anna Webber - saxophone

Lina Allemano - trumpet

Call and response: it’s one of the elemental components of creative music. We’ve gathered three masters of the moment and set them to work. Celebrated pianist Kris Davis improvised some music under lockdown in New York City and shared the track with the Toronto/Berlin-based trumpeter Lina Allemano and saxophonist Anna Webber—with one proviso. They both had to turn on their own recording equipment before they listened to what she had recorded, and respond completely in the moment. The artists only got to hear the result once the final edit was completed, and now you can hear it, too.

About the Artists

Kris Davis:

Pianist-composer Kris Davis has blossomed as one of the singular talents on the New York jazz scene.  Davis was voted top pianist in the 2019 Jazz Times Critics Poll and 2018 Rising Star Artist in Downbeat magazine.  The New York Times dubbed her as one of music’s top up-and-comers saying: “One method for deciding where to hear jazz on a given night has been to track down the pianist Kris Davis.” To date, Davis has released twelve recordings as a leader. Her newest release Diatom Ribbons was voted number 1 jazz album of 2019 by The New York Times and NPR, among others.

Anna Webber:

Saxophonist, flutist and composer Anna Webber’s interests and work life overlaps between avant-garde jazz and new classical music. Her most recent album, Clockwise, featuring a septet comprised of several of the most creative musicians working in New York’s avant-garde, was released on Pi Recordings (February 2019). Webber’s other projects include her Simple Trio, with John Hollenbeck and pianist Matt Mitchell, and the Webber/Morris Big Band, co-led with saxophonist/composer Angela Morris.
