Few drummers have impressed peers and critics with their raw originality to the extent that Mark Guiliana has. Even before his staggering contribution to David Bowie’s farewell album, Black Star, the 36-year-old New Jersey native was turning heads with his unique approach to both acoustic and electronic percussion. Guiliana first drew notice when his band HEERNT released Locked in a Basement in 2006, and he attracted worldwide attention as a member of bassist Avishai Cohen’s group for five years. In the studio, he contributed to recordings by artists as diverse as Meshell Ndegeocello and the Jazz Mandolin Project, and he has released six albums under his own name. His project with pianist Brad Mehldau, which mixes spoken word and music, has resulted in one recording, and Guiliana has been a member of saxophonist Donny McCaslin’s band since 2011. More recently, he has become a member of trumpeter Dave Douglas’s band High Risk.
