Located in southern Ontario’s Thames Valley, the town of Otterville is in the heart of tobacco country, but it’s also known as a primary stop for the Underground Railroad and the site of one of Canada’s first black communities. Otterville was also home to generations of Toronto bassist Andrew Downing’s relatives, and has come to symbolize peace and simplicity to the veteran musician. With Downing on cello, joined by Ottawa native Nick Fraser on drums, Tara Davidson on alto saxophone, Michael Davidson on vibes and Paul Mathew on bass, the band takes its sonic influence from the music of Billy Strayhorn. Including Strayhorn’s iconic “Take the A Train,” Otterville’s exceptional debut double CD explored melancholic, wistful environments. “It’s music that is about a mood,” says Downing, whose credits include tenures with trumpeter Lina Allemano, guitarist David Occhipinti and the Great Uncles of the Revolution.
