Take one improvising couple from New York City, add another from Amsterdam. Stir. That’s the formula for Perch Hen Brock & Rain—short form for veteran improvisers Ab Baars, Ig Henneman, Ingrid Laubrock and Tom Rainey. Saxophonist Baars and violist Henneman are stalwart members of Holland’s New Dutch Swing movement and collaborate frequently. Drummer Rainey has long been a first-call sideman on New York’s improv scene, appearing on more than 80 recordings. German-born Laubrock moved to New York in 2008 and quickly became one of the city’s most dynamic saxophonists. Since late 2014 the quartet has been coming together periodically to combine their distinctive voices and musical experiences. Those diverse elements make for highly varied soundscapes, which can include the free improvisation you might expect to far more meditative passages that reference chamber music. The band’s most-recent recording, Live @ The Jazz Happening Tampere, was released last year.
