Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1985, Pierre Kwenders first caught ears in his adopted Canada for his contributions to Radio Radio’s fourth album in 2012. Singing and rapping in four languages, Kwenders combines a broad range of African and Western influences. Electronic beats rub against vocal choruses in African dialects and then intercut to more traditional rap wordplay. Highly infectious rhythms are woven throughout. After releasing a pair of EPs in 2013, in 2014 Kwenders released the full-length Le Dernier empereur bantou, which was nominated for both a JUNO Award and the Polaris Music Prize. More recently, Kwenders has become an active member of Moonshine, a Montreal-based collective of DJs, instrumentalists and visual artists that is focused on representing diversity in all its facets. Along with fellow Moonshine member Ngabonziza Kiroko he has also formed Abakos, his first English-language project.
