Like Drive-By Truckers, Jason Isbell and Alabama Shakes before them, St. Paul & the Broken Bones is proving that Alabama is fertile ground for artists who combine a wealth of American musical influences. Formed by bassist Jesse Phillips and singer Paul Janeway in 2011, the octet found itself opening for the Rolling Stones two years later and performing at the Glastonbury Festival in 2016. Featuring Janeway’s expressive voice, a powerful horn section and tight rhythm section, the band recalls the timeless sound of Otis Redding but also integrates contemporary beats and sound dynamics. The band’s second album, Sea of Noise, was released in late 2016, garnering extensive airplay on campus and satellite radio, and its live shows continue to build the group’s reputation for highly energized performances in the tradition of its soul influences.
