“ At concerts I saw idols including Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, and Chaka Khan... These performances impassioned my dedication. Herbie Hancock gave specific personal feedback on my playing and shared about his own practices, musical and spiritual. ””

About the TD Jazz Youth Summit

The TD Jazz Youth Summit is a program run by the Ottawa Jazz Festival that brings together top young musicians from across the nation.

Taking place during the Festival, the Summit provides young Canadian musicians a rare platform to develop their big band experience by working with internationally acclaimed musicians and clinicians, culminating in two performances, one on June 30th at the TD Main Stage at Marion-Dewar Plaza, and for July 1st, Canada Day on the OLG Stage at Confederation Park.

The eight day all-expenses paid residency, from June 21st to July 1st,  will stay with the participants well after the Festival is over by building close friendships with peers, often resulting in lifelong professional partnerships.

Renowned Canadian jazz trumpet player and University of Toronto professor, Jim Lewis is the Summit’s Music Director. Besides recruiting the participants from across the nation and conducting rehearsals, he invites visiting musicians to the Festival to conduct workshops for Summit participants during their residence.

Participants also have the opportunity to perform alongside professional jazz musicians and legends during the Late Night Jam sessions happening every night at 10:30pm at Grill 41, located inside The Lord Elgin Hotel.

The experience:

  • Festival access
  • Daily master classes and rehearsals
