Every jazz festival on this continent—if not all over the world—holds tremendous respect for the Newport Jazz Festival. It was the first one, the grand daddy of them all… Newport is the root of jazz festivals. Everyone played Newport from Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, John Coltrane etc. Check out this footage of John Coltrane playing “My Favorite Things.”
To celebrate their 60th anniversary, a band has been put together that is not only full of stars, but is also thoughtfully put together to present the different scopes of jazz that have been presented at the Newport Jazz Festival.
Here is the band that will play at the Ottawa Jazz Festival on June 27.
Anat Cohen – The virtuosic clarinetist and saxophonist doubles as musical director.
Karrin Allyson – The four time Grammy Nominated singer is at the front of the group.
Randy Brecker – He is one of the legends that is still in great shape and playing strong as ever.
Mark Whifield – Guitarist extraordinaire, has records out on Verve and Warner Bros., has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Branford Marsalis, Quincy Jones… the list is as long as my arm.
Peter Martin – This pianist can often be seen as musical director with Dianne Reeves, or in Christian McBride’s band.
Larry Grenadier – Is of course part of the famous Brad Mehldau Trio and has been for yours. His clean and transparent tone is unmistakable.
Clarence Penn – Rounds out the band on drums. He has played in the Saturday Night Live band, he has won a Grammy with Maria Schneider, and has played with just about everyone under the sun.
Basically, hiding behind the name Newport Jazz Festival: Now 60 is this unbelievable band. What a collection of killer musicians. Each one is a well established leader on their own so it is a real treat to see this band.
Get your tickets early for this show, this will sell out!
