#WomenInMusic Spotlight: Judith Hill headlines opening night

Sunset soul for a funktastic opening night

JUNE 21 • TD MAIN STAGE • 8:30PM

Funked from birth, Judith Hill is a child prodigy who wrote her first song at the age of 4. Hill’s mother, a pianist from Tokyo, met her husband playing in a funk band in the 70s—Sly and the Family Stone. Together, Michiko Hill (keys) and Robert Hill (bass) back up their daughter on tour. It’s a family affair.

Judith was catapulted to fame in 2009 when she was chosen as Michael Jackson’s duet partner for his This Is It world tour and documentary film. Hill got another huge break in 2012 when her original song “Desperation” was featured in Spike Lee’s Red Hook Summer, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival that year.

Prince discovered Judith Hill early in her career, eventually recording and producing her award-winning 2015 album “Back in Time” at his Paisley Park studio.

Judith Hill and her band played Ottawa in 2016, in our After Dark Series, and that was the highlight of the festival for anyone there, myself included. When we heard Judith was touring this summer we had to put her on the TD Main Stage. Whoever will come will love it.

In 2013, Judith Hill incinerated judges and audiences as a finalist on Season 4 of The Voice before being shockingly eliminated in the Top 8 round. Her performances are considered some of the most memorable in the show’s history.
