Nellie McKay – piano, vocals, ukulele
British American – what’s she performing?
“Nellie McKay is a sui generis genius in the jazz world, able to swirl together cutting comedy and caustic commentary with a voice charming enough to make bitter pills go down like sweet nothings…” – Boston Globe.
Nellie McKay, who last performed at the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival in 2012, is one of those remarkably talented artists who’s done it all. The socially responsible humanitarian has released three wildly acclaimed albums of original music; received a Theatre World Award for her portrayal of Polly Peachum on Broadway; co-created an award-winning off-Broadway hit Old Hats, acted on the big screen in movies such as PS I Love You (playing Hilary Swank’s sister); authored three acclaimed musical biographies and performed duets with Eartha Kitt.
And the list goes on. Her music was featured in the movies Rumor Has It, Monster-in-Law, PS I Love You, Gasland, Last Holiday and Private Life. Nellie’s music has been heard on TV shows such as: Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Weeds, Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, Nurse Jackie, and SMILF. She has appeared on several TV shows including The Late Show with David Letterman, Conan, Ferguson, and The View. The Chase Brock Experience produced a ballet of her third album, Obligatory Villagers.
Conjuring the image of a lonely all night truck stop along Highway 1 on California’s coast, all but lost in the fog that comes creeping along the shoreline, her latest and seventh album Sister Orchid was conceived in solitude, executed in darkness.
